Do you like crying for fun? Welcome back! Hopefully, if you’re reading this, you read the first edition and watched those movies. If not, GO READ IT. Moving on, this time, I’ll be talking about the best genre of Tamil movies. While it’s not my personal favorite genre, it has some of the most phenomenal movies of all time. Emotional. I would’ve called it sad, but not all of the films I’m going to be talking about have a sad ending, they’re just SEVERE emotional rollercoasters. Let’s get to it, shall we!
Amaran: If you look at the posters for this movie, you see a soldier. Sometimes his wife is featured on the posters. But a lot of the time, it’s classified as an action movie. Heck, even Google calls it an action movie. In my eyes, however, this is a romance film and anyone who says otherwise clearly didn’t understand the point of the movie. I’ve only ever cried at three movies before. And this was one of them. I also cried THREE times within the span of two and a half hours. Mukund Varadharajan (Sivakarthikeyan Doss) is a Tamil Hindu man and Indu Rebecca Varghese (Sai Pallavi Kannan) is a Malayali Christian woman with extremely strict parents. They meet in college and fall in love. Indhu learns that Mukund wants to be in the military and supports his decision. We see Mukund pursue his dreams of the army. Meanwhile, back home, Indhu fights to be with the man she loves. We get to see how their relationship grows and also how Mukund grows in the army. This is one of my favourite movies of 2024. It was so bittersweet. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I am going to say that this is a true story. It’s a biopic of an actual soldier from Tamilnadu and his wife. This is a beautiful two hours and 49 minutes on Netflix. GO WATCH IT!
96: Ex-lovers Ram (Vijay Sethupathi) and Jaanu (Trisha Krishnan) meet up at a high school reunion and their hearts blow up. Not literally, well kind of, but mostly emotionally as all their memories wash over them. They spend the rest of the night together, seeing what could’ve been. We also get to see their past and see what their relationship as lovers was really like. My favourite thing about this movie is that it was a story that happens only between the two people. While there are other characters, it’s just them and that’s what makes it so comforting. It was extremely emotional and it was also a big comeback for Trisha. She was a big actor in the 2000s and had stopped acting for a while. But with this movie she came back with a bang! Krishnan effortlessly plays this sweet, yet empowering character. Vijay Sethupathi. While some of the roles he does now are questionable, I absolutely loved his role in this movie. Ram is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time. This was THE movie of 2019 and I would definitely recommend it if you need a sad, yet heartwarming two hours. This movie lives on Amazon Prime and is DEFINITELY worth it.
Anbe Sivam: Anbarasu (Madhavan) is getting married in a day. And he desperately needs to get home. Luckily he doesn’t go home alone. He meets a mentally disabled man, Nallasivam ‘Sivam’(Kamal Hassan), who becomes his travel companion. As they make the journey, Anbarasu learns more about kamlas devastating past and learns how to be a better person throughout the way. Kamal Hassan. His nickname is ‘Ulaganayagan’ which translates to Global Star. Which is extremely fitting. He plays Sivam SO WELL. This movie definitely taught me a bunch of important lessons and it was a delight to watch Anbarasu go from this cocky, annoying young man to a thoughtful, sweet person who would do anything for his companion that he’s known for 48 hours. This movie lives on both Prime Video and Sling TV. I adore this movie and it is perfect for a gloomy rainy day.
Meiyazhagan: This was my favorite movie of 2024, and I’ve already rewatched it thrice. This movie is mixed with sadness, and nostalgia. This movie is set in the area where I was born, and everyone in the movie acted like people in my family. It was extremely realistic and they got literally everything right about the culture. Arulmozhi(Aravind Swamy), someone forced to move out of his hometown due to problems with his relatives, returns to the town for the wedding of his cousin. Once he arrives at the wedding and starts to reconnect with relatives (the nice ones), Arulmozhi meets this man. Let’s call him ‘Mystery’ (Karthik Sivakumar). Mystery seems so excited that he’s here, and offers to help with everything. Wow Dhanya, that sounds so nice of him, but I thought you said this movie was sad? The problem, you see, was that Arulmozhi doesn’t know who Mystery is. At all. Mystery knows EVERYTHING about him, but Arul can’t even remember his name. What happens next? I don’t know, watch the movie. Sivakumar is one of the most underrated actors of all time. This movie is on Netflix and is something that if you don’t watch, you’re seriously missing out.
Once again, these are amazing movies and I hope that you will trust me and watch these movies (and cry?). I really think that you will enjoy them!
