The Golden Globes Host Made a Disastrous Attempt at Humor Leaving Viewers, Like Me, Livid

Jo Koy made many mysoginistic comments while hosting the 2024 Golgen Globes, comments that outraged thousands across social media. His slashes at Barbie and Taylor Swift ruined his reputation before he even began to take off.

I, like many, tuned into the 81st Golden Globes to watch my favorite movies of the year get the awards they deserve. Instead, I was hit with a sexist host whose outdated jokes left me wildly uncomfortable.

The Golden Globes’ host, Jo Koy, is under fire for how atrocious and outright misogynistic his jokes were. The most notable bad joke is mocking Barbie, where Koy claims the film is simply a doll with big “boobies.”

This highly inappropriate and disgusting commentary on Barbie left me with a bitter taste in my mouth and a bone to pick. Another comment about Barbie and ‘character acting’ left many celebrities with disgust written all over their face.  Greta Gerwig’s masterpiece shouldn’t be the punchline for a so-called ‘comedian’ no one knew before he hosted the Golden Globes.

Koy has either never watched Barbie and exclusively read Reddit reviews from incels, or completely missed the point of the entire movie – jokes like his go against the entire point of the film.

Not only did Koy bash Barbie, he also made comments about Taylor Swift that left many fans, myself included, outraged.  He ‘joked’ that the NFL gave Swift more camera time than the Golden Globes. Jokes about Swift’s dating life are outdated and jokes aimed at Travis Kelce and Swift’s relationship are no exception.

Instead of commenting on Swift’s tour, which included a 3-hour set list, Koy chose to focus only on her current relationship. Jokes like these have been in poor taste for years now.

The backlash is rampant; Swifties, Barbie fans, and anyone with half a brain cell are coming together to call out a misogynistic comedian wanna-be. It truly warms my heart to see people in unity canceling a sexist.

Throughout his monologue, Koy throws writers under the bus quite often, saying things like “I didn’t write some of these jokes.” He knew he screwed up so he blamed others anytime a joke didn’t land right. Maybe it really was the writers’ god-awful jokes, but Koy still could have chosen not to tell jokes that were so clearly wrong.

In the age of Barbie, girl power, and cancel culture, how could anyone think that those blatantly disrespectful and bigoted jokes wouldn’t end in disaster? Koy either hasn’t interacted with a human since 2001, or he’s simply a misogynist who just wants to hate on women.

Whether it was the writer’s fault, Koy being a bigot, or a mix of both, his behavior still proved he is just another middle-aged man with an unwarranted opinion on women. Koy has set his reputation on fire and doomed his career before it started.
