Driver’s License by Disney star Olivia Rodrigo has everyone in their feels
January 18, 2021
When High School Musical: The Musical: The Series introduced us to then-16-year-old Olivia Rodrigo (Nina Salazar), her amazing voice, and her songwriting, it was no doubt she was going to be big.
Just a little more than a year after the show was released, she has made history as the first Asian- American woman to hit number #1 on both iTunes and Apple Music charts with her debut single “Driver’s License,”, surpassing even Taylor Swift on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The song set the Spotify record for the most streams in a day for a non-holiday song, and then went on to beat its own record. The music video has accumulated 41 million views and counting.
Rodrigo, originally known for her role as Paige Olvera on Bizaardvark and Nina Salazar-Roberts on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, recently wrote about how she finally received her driver’s license and can now drive through the suburbs constantly reminded throughout of her ex-lover (Joshua Bassett).
The lyrics give a sense of familiarity to many who have shared their stories as going through similar breakups and relationship struggles. Taylor Swift even spoke out as the 17-year-old surpassed her, her Evermore album, and its tracks, commenting under one of Rodrigo’s recent Instagram posts: “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud.”
Fans speculate that this ex-lover is Joshua Bassett, a co-star on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The two were rumored to have been dating during the filming of the show and were said to have broken up in late 2020.
In the song, Rodrigo sings, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt/ She’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about.” Fans speculate these lyrics may be about a blonde fellow Disney star, Sabrina Carpenter, who’s 21 – 4 years older than Rodrigo, who’s 17.
Bassett and Carpenter have been seen attending protests together and hanging around one another. They even spent Halloween together as Sharkboy and Lavagirl, as seen on Bassett’s tiktok.
You can catch me driving through the suburbs, playing this song on repeat, feeling all the feels with Rodrigo.
Bassett’s new song, titled “Lie Lie Lie,” came out Jan. 14, 2021. The song has been talked about since early 2019 and fans say that it’s pretty unlikely for it to be about Rodrigo but rather an ex-friendship.
