Creek has received a lot of freshman enrollment in the 2024-25 school year, a change that has affected many freshman classes adding up a total of 14 new classes, but typically 5 classes are added.
“Someone came into our class and was taking volunteers to switch classes,” one student who offered to change classes, freshman Grace Bond said. According to Bond, around five students volunteered.
Many of the original freshman classes became overcrowded, with more than 30 students in a class, and the process of balancing it expanded into other classes. The overall enrollment for the Creek student body was projected at 3,744 students, however this year it ended up being 3,900 students. The freshman class ended up having 960 students, 80 more than expected.
However the class was not the largest enrollment for Cherry Creek. The largest enrollment was in 2024 which ended being “over a thousand students” said Assistant Principal Marcus McDavid. “This year’s freshman class was bigger than expected”.
Some students were called to volunteer, while others were swapped out of their class.
Because of over-enrollment, students in CP Physical Science with seventh period off moved into science teacher Benjamin Hanson’s new seventh period course. Their old science class then became their new off period.
With the large group of 9th graders joining Creek, the expansion for more classes was taken upon by all the departments, those being English 9H, Science Honors, United States History, and College Algebra.
“The department asked for volunteers who had seventh and eighth off and could add extra sections,” Hanson said. “It was decided that I would get the extra classes”.
