WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Amar Kaushik’s “Stree 2.”
Indian movies all usually follow the same plotline no matter what genre it is: there always has to be romance between the lead actors, the rest of the story’s plot is usually pushed to the side. But in this case, Stree 2 genuinely surprised me.
The first Stree movie released in 2018, and since then it’s been in my top five favorite’s list. It’s a horror movie about the ghost of a woman named Stree, who terrorizes Chanderi, a town in India, and kidnaps men. That’s until the main character Vicky, played by Rajkummar Rao, and his friends meet a mysterious girl who helps them stop Stree and save their town.
But in the second movie, the main villain is the headless ghost of one of the men who killed Stree in the first place, and he starts kidnapping women. Vicky and his gang are, again, ready and willing to stop him.
Without spoiling the entire movie, I have to say, the movie shouldn’t even be considered horror. To me, Indian movies don’t usually do well when they try to be scary, and Stree wasn’t an exception. Everything from the CGI to the script was so unserious and not close to being scary at all that I genuinely forgot it was a horror movie at times.
That being said, the movie wasn’t bad at all. The humor in the movie had me laughing the entire time. Rao always knows how to make me laugh and is an incredible actor, he’s the only person I believe is fit to play the role of Vicky.
Speaking of actors, actress Shraddha Kapoor did an amazing job returning to her role as the mysterious girl who helps Vicky. Throughout the movie she remains such a mystery and does an excellent job at hiding her true identity, just like how she did in the first movie.
Near the end of the movie there’s even a random crossover, and Varun Dhawan shows up as Bhaskar Sharma from his recent movie “Bhediya” and helps Vicky and the mysterious girl defeat the headless man. I haven’t watched “Bhediya,” but seeing Dhawan’s hilarious appearance gave me the sudden urge to watch it.
Overall, Stree 2 exceeded my expectations, and I honestly like the second movie better than the first. Based on the final end scene, which showed the headless man possessing his ancestor who was shown during the movie, it does look like there will be a Stree 3, and I cannot wait to see what the writers have in store for us next.
