The doctor that’s taking America by storm

MORE THAN JUST A DOCTOR: This show takes care of a lot more than just his patients.

With a 97% approval rating among Google users, The Good Doctor is taking America by storm.

Freddie Highmore, who plays Shaun Murphy, has a particularly tricky role. The challenge is being accurate without being disrespectful.

In this show Dr. Murphy, a surgeon with both Autism and Savant syndrome, uses his unique abilities to save lives. Shaun overcomes obstacles and challenges the criticism from the other doctors.

Not only is the show centered around a doctor with a disability; the program has also touched sexual harassment, racial biases, and domestic abuse as well as other current issues.

The a recent episode stars Sophie Giannamore as a transgender girl. What is special about this casting is guest star Giannamore identifies as a transgender actress in real life. It is unusual that a transgender person plays a character who they identify with.

In an interview with The New York Post, Highmore said, “I feel a great sense of responsibility to portray Shaun as authentically as possible. I’m aware of the fact that he can’t — nor should we try to make him — represent people who live with autism.”

Writer David Shore also faces this challenge. In an interview with TVLine, he explained that his team did extensive research when creating this character. They consulted experts and watched documentaries.

Although this is a medical show, it isn’t as gory as shows like Grey’s Anatomy and it has the same amount of heart warming authenticity similar to NBC’s show This Is Us.

In my opinion, both Freddie Highmore and David Shore continue to live up to the difficult challenge of making the role both entertaining as well as believable and they continue to do so with every episode.
