In 2010, sophomore Faye Walker was battling cancer.

“We didn’t want to sit around and do nothing, so we had a 5K,” Math teacher and sponsor of Play Strong, Karl Mimmack said.

Walker is now a cancer survivor and a CU graduate and is pursuing her career in gene therapy to help patients battling cancer.

Play Strong was started that year, in 2010, but was then called 5K For Faye, but is now known as the Creek Tramples Cancer 5K. It is still around today to raise awareness and support Creek families battling cancer.

The club does two annual runs, Creek Tramples Cancer 5k, which took place on Nov. 19 this year, and Lights Out run, which falls on May 5. All the proceeds from the fall run go to Creek families battling cancer and all the proceeds from the spring run goes to the Cancer Research Center at Children’s Hospital.

“It’s family friendly and we’re just there to support others,” Mimmack said.

This year’s Creek Tramples Cancer 5K raised around $1,200, according to Mimmack. The turnout was about 100 people, who were mainly people supporting others with cancer.

On Wednesday Nov. 22, Play Strong presented a $10,000 check to the pediatric cancer research center at the Children’s Hospital from all the money raised from the Lights Out run last May.
